Minimally invasive bunion surgery is a surgical procedure to remove bunions that requires only a small incision. A minimally invasive foot procedure has many advantages over conventional open-foot surgery, including minimal pain and short recovery time. Bunions are corrected using very small, one stitch incisions that do not require general anesthesia. With local anesthesia, your foot is numb and you remain conscious. Your foot is wrapped up post-op in a soft cast allowing you to walk right out of the operating room. A hammer toe is a toe that is unnaturally contracted at the joint, forming a claw-like appearance that can cause discomfort and friction, as well as corns and calluses. Hammer toes occur because the tendons and muscles cause irregular pressure against the bone of the toe, forcing it into a bent, cramped position. Hammer toes can be rigid or flexible at the joint; each type requires a different approach for proper treatment. Ingrown toenails are nails that grow into the skin instead of on top of it. While they can occur on any toe, they most frequently occur on the big toe. Ingrown toenails are typically very painful, with pain increasing when wearing shoes, walking, or otherwise placing pressure on the foot and the toes. An ingrown toenail causes pain, discomfort, and also places you at risk for potential infection. When the ingrown edge pierces the skin, it creates an opening that can allow microorganisms—bacteria, viruses, fungi—to enter the body. Infections from these organisms are bad enough for otherwise healthy individuals, but can be downright dangerous when there are existing medical conditions, like diabetes, that compromise the immune system. One of the most common causes of ingrown toenails is improper nail trimming. Toenails should always be cut straight across and not curved to the shape of the toe to prevent the edges of the nail from burrowing into the skin. Other common causes include wearing shoes that don’t fit correctly, especially those that fit very tightly around the toe area. Men and women with thick nails or nails that tend to curve inward are also at an increased risk of developing ingrown toenails. Over time, the area around the nail can become infected if not treated. People with diabetes or other diseases of the circulatory system, as well as people who experience numb feet, need to be especially careful with ingrown toenails since they can become infected without the person being aware of it. In these people, severe, advanced infection can spread to the rest of the toe, requiring amputation. If the condition is not severe, properly grooming the affected toenail can reverse the condition. The most common form of medical treatment for moderate to severe ingrown toenails involves injecting a numbing anesthetic into the toe and then removing the portion of the nail that has become ingrown. Once the nail portion is removed, a special chemical is applied to prevent the ingrown portion from regrowing. The procedure requires no incisions or stitches, and patients typically continue to wear their normal shoes as the area heals. Corns are hardened areas of dead skin that form as a result of continual pressure or repetitive friction. Over time, the body forms a hard spot in the skin to protect the underlying structure of the foot. Corns can form on the bottom of the foot or between the toes. Unlike calluses, corns have a central core that can be extremely painful. Corns sound a lot like calluses, right? Well, they are fairly similar, but there is a difference in the size and shape. Calluses are larger, wider, and tend to have an edge that isn’t as clear. Calluses form from putting pressure on the area as you walk. Calluses can form wherever a lot of pressure is being put on your feet, or over a bony area beneath your toes, on your heel and on the side of your big toe. Usually, the first step in treating corns is to make sure the shoes you’re wearing are the correct size and shape. Corns that cause little to moderate pain can be treated with moleskin or special pads, or with regular foot soaks and gentle pumicing to remove dead skin. For more stubborn corns, Dr. Glass can help by paring or trimming the corn to reduce thickness. In some cases, such as when a corn is caused by a hammer toe or bunion, surgery may be needed to correct the underlying problem to keep the corn from recurring. For people who require a wide shoe for their toes but have a narrow heel, friction in the heel can be prevented with orthotic inserts. A bunion is a bony projection or hump that forms at the base of the big toe where it meets the foot. The projection often forces the big toe out of alignment so it points toward the other toes. During walking and other locomotion, the joint of your big toe typically bears a lot of weight. When a bunion is present, it can cause considerable pain and discomfort. Bunions can also cause increased friction against footwear, resulting in calluses and blisters. A podiatrist can usually diagnose a bunion during a physical exam. Most heel pain and discomfort is caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a band of connective tissue that travels across the bottom of the foot, from the area just behind the toes all the way to the heel. This condition is called plantar fasciitis. Sometimes, pain can occur as a result of injury to the plantar fascia, but more commonly, it occurs as a result of the natural aging process, heel spurs, arthritis, obesity, gout or other local or systemic issues. Sometimes, foot positioning when walking can also contribute to plantar fascia pain. Pain tends to be more prevalent first thing in the morning, or after a prolonged period of sitting or lying down. Like many chronic conditions, heel pain is first managed conservatively, typically with orthotic inserts or devices to help gently stretch the foot, combined with oral medications and cortisone injections as needed. Calluses form as your body’s natural defense mechanism as it attempts to protect itself against friction or excessive pressure.  An increase in pressure or friction against the skin of your foot causes a hardened area of dead skin to form. Unless the underlying cause is treated, they’ll continue to form. In general, calluses are not harmful, but can occasionally lead to infections or ulcerations of the skin.
